Green day are a well known punk rock band from USA. They have been an active band from 1987 and are still producing quality music to this day. The key element of Green Day's branding is through fashion and their mode of address. As they've been a band for 3 decades, they've needed to change their look during the time period, in order to attract a new audience. Green Day don't have a certain fashion statement, the band tend to wear whatever they feel most comfortable in. However across their 12 studio albums they have a different look in each era. During the 90s, they wore typical teenage clothes, dyed their hair obnoxious colours and regularly varied their hair cuts. In the early 90s they were only just becoming a band, they played in small clubs and punk houses, the most well known punk club they played in was 924 Gilman. Their brand image wasn't very significant back then as nobody knew them apart from the local demographic. They also didn't wear branded clothing such as Nike and Adidas, instead they wore small independent brands, in order to promote that fashion branch. When they reached worldwide dominance  in the punk rock scene with the release of Dookie (1994) their image began to change. The band saw a rapidly increasing fan base during this time as the album became the bands greatest album, picking up over 20 million record sales, in USA the album was given the Diamond certificate. Throughout their development, they didn't change anything about themselves, they still regularly dyed their hair and wore usual clothes. However the coverage did allow the band to tour in stadiums instead of small clubs and back gardens, as they did in their 2 albums prior to Dookie. In 1994, during their US summer tour, they were asked to headline the Woodstock Music festival. They totally immersed with the audience towards the end of the show. As the concert was waterlogged the audience started to through mud at the band, they reacted by throughout it back and joined the crowed on ground level. this illustrated that even though they did blow up massively, they still appreciate the crowed and they know their job is to entertain them. They're also very active with the crowd, if not more now than ever. They have a set playlist, they rarely change and their are certain songs where the band give the opportunity for lucky members of the audience to participate with the band up on the stage. In the hit single "Longview" they invite young members on the stage to play the guitar for the second verse, Billie Joe Armstrong (frontman) then tells that member they can keep the guitar. During "Know your enemy" the band invites a member on stage to do a stage dive. They also regularly shoot merchandise from the stage into the crowd. They are one of the most respected bands in the genre as they care about the crowds well being throughout their concert. During the 2000s and 2010s the bands image has changes very slightly. They wear suit orientated clothing such as tight black jeans, waistcoats and ties. The type of music they produce does determine the clothing they wear for tours and photo shoots. However when they're not in the spotlight they wear usual clothing and it's difficult to determine the members when they're dressed as usual people. In 2004 the band wore eyeliner during their American Idiot tour. They're very open with their fans and they believe that you should be able to wear whatever you want that makes you happy, even if it was made for the other sex. Green Days social media is typically used to inform the followers about gigs, tours and news involving the band. Their account on Instagram has 1.8 million followers and each member has a individual account. The followers range from 1.5 million on Billie Joe Armstrong's to 512,000 on Tre Cool's. Billie's account is very much politics and how America is at a disadvantage with having Trump as president. Like i said, the band don't shy away from expressing their views with the world, even if it does cause hate and controversy. Over the years they've had several logos and album covers, some have became rather iconic and not just in the punk rock genre. The American Idiot album cover has became the most well known cover from any Green Day album. Billies guitar has also became a huge branding asset. As a role model to thousands of vocalists and guitarists, his guitar "Blue" has became also very iconic through the past 30 years and many guitar sops have made replicas. In 2012 Billie Joe was offered a signature Les Paul Junior with his custom pickups. After Dookie gained worldwide recognition, Green Day's further albums were more about the album cover than the logo. The typography has also changed depending on the album's name. For example, Warning (2000) has a rundown, abandoned typography, the content of the album reinforces the typography. In 2012 when UNO was released, the typography was almost distorted, just like the effect they had over the microphone while recording, it disorted the voice. The bright pink text also implies the album wasn't rock  but more pop. also portrayed through certain songs such as "let yourself go" and "stay the night", the punk lyrics were there but the sound created was pop. Over the years it's been fundamental to the success of Green Day to experiment and vary the material produced in order to keep themselves from getting bored but also the audiences, new or old.
